Stress Management: How does chronic stress affect us, and what can we do to get back into balance? | Part 1

In today’s fast-paced world, chronic stress has become a common affliction. Stress, especially when it becomes chronic stress, is an overwhelming feeling that doesn’t easily go away. Technically, stress is a biological response to a perceived or real demanding situation. Thousands of years ago, this might have meant being chased by a predator or facing another immediate threat. Today, it’s more likely triggered by an overflowing inbox, your kids’ hectic sports schedules, challenging relationships, work deadlines, exams, financial worries, and more.

Stress hormones

When faced with these modern stressors, your body releases two primary hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones are designed to support you in threatening situations. Adrenaline speeds up your heart rate, increases blood pressure, and gives you a surge of energy. Cortisol, on the other hand, prompts your body to release glucose into your bloodstream, providing your muscles and brain with more energy.

Typically, once the stressful situation passes, hormone levels return to normal. However, in cases of chronic stress, these hormone levels remain elevated. This persistent elevation can lead to several health issues, such as elevated blood glucose levels, a consistently high heart rate, a suppressed immune system, and increased gut motility, among other ripple effects. The impacts of chronic stress can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Disrupted sleep
  • Weight gain, particularly in the face and abdomen
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent infections and colds
  • Low libido
  • Digestive issues
  • Headaches
  • And many more…
