This is a perfect example of what personalized nutrition looks like in our home, where we are working on hormone balance and heart health. We strive to be intentional with our nutrition, and overnight oats have become a staple. While the base remains the same, the specific additions are carefully chosen to align with our unique health goals and individual needs.
For my husband, the focus is on supporting healthy cholesterol levels with extra fiber and antioxidants. Flaxseeds and chia seeds, both rich in Omega-3 fats and fiber, are key components. Chia seeds are also high in antioxidants, which play an important role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and reducing inflammation. He also tops his oats with berries—not just for flavor, but for their high antioxidant content.
Oats, in particular, contain beta-glucan, a type of fiber that aids the liver in removing cholesterol from the blood. I also include cashew nuts and Brazil nuts, both of which contain nutrients known to support cardiovascular health. Additionally, pumpkin seeds are added for their zinc and magnesium content, essential minerals for male reproductive health.
As for myself, I focus on hormone balance and gut health. Although we share the same oat base, the ratios of oats and protein differ slightly to meet my needs. As a perimenopausal woman, I prioritize protein to help maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. I also incorporate different seeds depending on where I am in my menstrual cycle. To support estrogen and metabolism during the first half of my cycle, I add ground flax seeds and raw pumpkin seeds. During the second half, I switch to sunflower and sesame seeds to support progesterone levels. I usually top my oats with L. Reuteri yogurt, which offers many gut health benefits, along with strawberries and blueberries for their Vitamin C content, crucial for adrenal health.
